Solutions to Global Challenges

Protection of life below water

Gain powerful insight from modelling technology on how to best work with nature and adapt human activities to ensure environmentally sustainable projects in water environments

The issue

海洋自然资源丰富,提供支持the livelihood of over three billion people and buffer global warming effects. But exploitation and pollution are threatening ecosystems, biodiversity and ultimately food security. This is why DHI supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #14 – Life Below Water, to ‘conserve and sustainably use our oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development’.

Why it matters

Marine debris threaten biodiversity through entanglement or ingestion by organisms. Coastal waters are deteriorating due to nutrient loading and following eutrophication – a phenomenon expected to affect 20% of large marine ecosystems by 2050. Important habitats are under pressure and as an example, about 20% of the world’s coral reefs have today been destroyed and nearly 50% of remaining reefs are under imminent risk of collapse through human pressures.

How DHI can help

DHI is your partner for sustainable marine and coastal development, resource exploration, ecological restoration and conservation. Our ecosystem-based approach addresses biological, spatial and organisational relationships backed by advanced modelling technology and monitoring data including satellite imagery. This experience enables us to bridge data, science and policy by facilitating communication between stakeholders, government bodies and your business.

Integrated solutions

At DHI, we incorporate the latest scientific and technological advances into custom solutions to help solve the specific challenges you face within the broader context of an ecosystem.

Protect biodiversity in ocean and coastal habitats with compensatory mitigation

Mitigation efforts can replace the loss of valuable resources when anthropogenic impacts to coastal habitats cannot be avoided. This is especially valuable in the planning stages. Partner with DHI to develop real solutions including coral nursery and reef transplantation, artificial reef development, mangrove foresting and seagrass restoration. Using advanced technology, DHI can assess environmental stressors and secure measures to ensure successful compensatory mitigation based on e.g impact model scenarios. Satellite data can also be used effectively to monitor the health status of sensitive habitats.

Secure regulatory clearance, permit and licensing with trusted EIA support

Characterising sites and documenting environmental conditions as part of an EIA is often complex. DHI uses intuitive models calibrated against field observations to describe baseline components and quantify impacts. We can then establish project specific indicators, threats, risks and thresholds to be used as part of the EIA. Satellite data offers an additional layer of insight including maps of shallow water bathymetry, aquatic vegetation and geomorphological dynamics. Whereas underwater acoustic and agent-based modelling help visualise and quantify the impacts of sound exposure on marine mammals.

Rely on development and monitoring support for marine strategies and policies

Effectively promoting conservation and sustainable resource use is a tremendous undertaking. Governing agencies rely on DHI's environmental knowledge and access to advanced modelling tools and resources to initiate, sustain and enforce environmental protection. Our ecosystem-based management approach towards lasting solutions involves community influence as well as planning and management from local, regional and national government bodies and management agencies.Together, we have the power to sustain our precious ocean resources.

Ensure regulatory compliance with Environmental Monitoring and Management Planning (EMMP)

To keep marine infrastructure projects moving forward, it's important mitigate potential impacts along the way. DHI's pioneering Feedback EMMP approach is designed to monitor dredging or reclamation activities on top of traditional receptors. We make it easy to develop spill budgets, assess daily sedimentation loads and run complex scenarios through a simple web interface. Satellite data is also used to map and monitor sediment plumes. When coupled with a traditional EIA, Feedback EMMPs ensure regulatory compliance to advance your projects and developments faster.

安全的可持续和健康的海鲜production

Meeting the increased need for more efficient and secure sea food production while sustaining the environment takes a data-driven approach. DHI uses targeted decision support systems to integrate, monitor and model data into near real-time to help you optimise site selection and production. Operational models can provide water quality condition forecasts and warnings of infection risks. Our models even have the power to predict the consequences of climate changes within the food chain to better protect your livelihood.

How to tackle the problem of ocean plastic pollution with technology

A recent study reveals that the amount of plastics in our oceans has been increasing significantly since its use became widespread in the 50s, and this problem is likely to get worse. This problem is not going away, but technology can help in doing something about it. Agent-based modelling, used for advanced simulations of behaviour and states of individuals or particles in response to the environment, is one of the methods that can be used to clean up our seas.

Why care about the effects of underwater noise on marine life?

Human activities such as shipping, marine construction, seismic surveys and dredging produce underwater sound. Whales and dolphins sometimes respond to this noise by moving away, which can have considerable consequences if behaviours such as feeding and mating are interrupted. Very intense sound can even injure them. Because there is an increased usage of the marine environment, there is a huge need to assess noise impacts underwater. Watch our expert interview to know more.
